WHITBY FABRICS JUNIOR SEWING ACADEMY
The Whitby Fabrics
Junior Sewing Academy is a unique and very successful program
that teaches lifelong sewing skills to girls and boys, ages 6 –
17. Weekly classes are one hour long and are kept small (4
students) to provide lots of individual attention. They are held
at our store and in teachers' homes. Machines are provided for
each student. The highlight of the year is our annual May
fashion show where the children proudly model their creations
for family and friends. If you are interested in enrolling your
child in the JSA program, or in becoming a teacher, contact
Laurie at Whitby Fabrics. (905) 668-4821 for more details.

DENISE JULIAN
Denise Julian has been a Whitby Fabrics JSA teacher in North
Whitby for over 10 years. A sewer for most of her life, Denise
was taught to sew by her mother. Following graduation from the
University of Waterloo with an honors degree in major recreation
and leisure studies, Densie worked in Peterboro and Sudbury.
Over the past 25 years, she and her husband Rob, a teacher in
Ajax, have been Whitby residents and have raised a son and
daughter. Denise is a partner in Kutaways, a company that makes
custom outerwear for people who are wheelchair bound. Denise has
always enjoyed working with children, in both sports and
creative arts, and watching them develop and achieve success.
She has had as many as 48 children enrolled in her sewing

ESTHER CAMPBELL
Esther Campbell has been a Whitby Fabrics employee and a teacher
in the Junior Sewing Academy for many years. She, her husband
Paul and their 2 children are longtime residents of Whitby.
Esther moved to Canada as a teenager from Yugoslavia where she
had learned to sew as a young girl. Her father was a tailor in
Yugoslavia and she often helped out by removing the hand basting
in men’s suits. She graduated from Sheridan College in Oakville
as a graphic designer illustrator and worked in this field for
12 years until moving to Whitby. Esther loves fashion and
design. Her creative ability and sewing skills have proven to be
a wonderful asset to both the store and the Junior Sewing
program, where she has watched with pride as many of her young
sewers have graduated and continued their sewing while pursuing
higher education.
